Yeah, we get it. Bees can sting. Who likes that part? Well, there is more to this story, much more!
The Importance of Bees
The most important thing bees do is pollinate. Pollination is critically needed for plants to reproduce–and bees play a major role. How does this work? When bees collect pollen from a plant’s flower, some of the pollen from the male reproductive organ of the flower sticks to the hairs of their bodies. When bees visit the next flower, some of that pollen rubs off onto the female productive organ of the flower. When this process happens, fertilization becomes possible. Fruit, which carries seed, can then develop.
Why bees matter
Well, aside from the fact that every living organism matters, bees are one of the main characters responsible for many of the foods and crops upon which we have come to rely as a society. Been pollination is crucial. Here are some of the crops that benefit from bee pollination:
That is quite the list, right? With bees increasingly scarce across North America and with them serving as one of the most important characters behind our food, it is no wonder researchers across the US are trying to figure out what is happening. Bees are not just dying. They have seemingly vanished.
Imagine a world without a bee? We can’t, but our children might be able to in the very near future.
