Earth Day is almost upon us—Saturday, April 22—which is why we thought it would be fun to talk about how it all began.

Earth Day History

It all began in 1970 when at the time there were very few, if any, consequences related to pollution. It was seen as the cost of doing business. It was the price many seemed to associate earth daywith “progress.”

The idea for a national Earth Day was the brainchild of Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator at the time from Wisconsin. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, and disgusted at the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, he believed he could foment a national movement related to raising awareness about air and water pollution.

He brought in some key people to help him promote events across the country—and he picked April 22 as the date, because it fell right in between spring break and final exams for students.

Incredibly, 20 million people took to the streets and venues across the country on April 22, 1970. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests, too. Groups that had previously been fighting against the extinction of wildlife, the loss of wilderness, raw sewage and other related issues realized that they shared common values and a bigger vision. The earth mattered.

That first Earth Day actually led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency as well as the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. “It was a gamble,” Gaylord recalled, “but it worked.”
