Soil compaction is very common in heavily used lawns, which makes aeration so important. Ideally, you want soil with 50 percent solids and 50 percent of porous space. That space helps to create the soil structure where soil life can thrive. Without that space, it is difficult for roots to grow deeply into your soil. It can also lead to run-off during storms.

Recently, we purchased a mechanical aerator that can help move us along and enable fungi to get through the soil structure a little better. Fungi are very important characters in the soil food web.

Aeration

Aeration of your lawn is most effective when is holes are made as deep and often as possible. Our mechanical aerator takes this one step further because it can aerate the soil in two different directions to provide the greatest relief from compaction.

Depending on how often your yard is used, lawn aerification should take place once per year. Late summer and early fall are the best times because there is much less competition with weeds. We can also overseed your yard, too, or add topdressing. For some, overseeding seems like an unnecessary practice, but grass is a short lived perennial and some grasses will die off. Aeration is thus just one piece of the organic lawn care puzzle!
